Richard Liu Qiangdong is one of the wealthiest men in China, something that’s largely thanks to his company Jingdong, also known as JD.com. Since founding the company over a decade ago, Richard Liu has steered the company toward generating a significant amount of yearly revenue. According to some of the most recent reports, JD.com has over 100 million users and has been estimated to be worth $12 billion. This hasn’t been the easiest journey, however, as there were quite a few challenges that Qiangdong and the business itself have had to overcome.
Richard Liu Qiangdong initially attended the People’s University of China and graduate with a degree in Sociology. After graduating, however, he realized that this might not have been the best career choice for him. Because of that, he soon began studying Computer Science and found work as freelance coder. After a short period, Richard Liu found a full-time position with Japan Life, who had been a prominent nutritional supplement provider in the area. During his time with the company, Qiangdong was able to climb the corporate ladder and was eventually named its Director of Computers.
Lie Qiangdong still had an itch that he couldn’t scratch with the company, however. This is because he was determined to establish his own company. This led to him departing from Japan Life and setting up a small store in the center of Beijing. Named Jingdong, the store sold a limited range of magneto-optical products. Soon, the business began to grow, with much of this being driven by Richard Liu Qiangdong’s focus on providing a high standard of customer service.
Because of this dedication, Jingdong grew to have 13 stores across Beijing. A SARS outbreak began to threaten this, as it began to make contact with customers much more difficult. This led to Richard Liu Qiangdong moving more of his products to JD.com as he began closing each of his stores. This was a move that ended up reaping dividends for the company. Soon, various product manufacturers began partnering with JD.com, which helped to further fuel its growth. Since then, the company has gone on to become the largest e-commerce retailer in China.
