He started his own company in order to advise other American entrepreneurs that want to expand their market into Europe.

He has provided his consulting services to Fortune 100 firms, startups in the technology sector, and wealthy individuals. Maarten de Jeu says that expanding your company’s market overseas can be very rewarding but it’s not nearly as simple as some belief it to be. There are legal, cultural, and other issues that need to be taken into account in order for a product to be successfully launched in another country.

The first thing to research is whether there is even a market for your product in another country. There might be a lot of demand for it in your own country’s market but that doesn’t by itself mean people in other countries want it. Maarten de Jeu says that research needs to be conducted to see if there is already a similar product available in that country and how much people pay for it. If your company is going to successfully launch than it needs to be priced competitively while still earning your company a profit.

Language and culture are big influences to take into account. If your company doesn’t employ people who speak the language then you will need to find someone fluent in it to act as your representative. Writing on the product and any instructions for it will need to be skillfully translated. Advertising will also, of course, need to be translated. You also need your representative to know the culture intimately so you can be sure everything about your product is culturally appropriate. Following the laws and regulations of a country, you sell products in is critical. Maarten de Jeu says that the best course of action is to hire an attorney in the country you’ll be doing business in as well as a local business expert. These individuals are well worth the investment as falling afoul of the law or regulations can be costly and damage your company’s reputation.
