Daniel Taub, Israel’s ambassador to Britain, paid a visit to Bradford on August 18th. This visit was prompted by remarks made by George Galloway, the Bradford West MP. The Member of Parliament declared his electorate an Israel free zone.
The Telegraph &Argusreported Taub to having attributed his visit to an invitation from the people of Bradford city. He added that he would take that opportunity to meet with religious leaders, councilors among others. He saw this as a shot at diplomacy to try and calm any reservations harbored against Israel. Daniel Taub was born in Great Britain and went to school in Oxford and Harvard University’s school of government. In 1989, he relocated to Israel where he served as a combat medic for the defense forces. A few years later Mr. Taub moved to the defense forces’ international law division becoming a reserve officer.
He started at the foreign affairs ministry in 1991 marking the beginning of a career in diplomacy. Since then Daniel Taub has had the privilege of holding several diplomatic posts. Some of his achievements include the inclusion of the Israel Red Cross society into the international Red Cross movement after being excluded for 70 years; he was also part of the team sent to negotiate during the Israel-Syria negotiations.
Daniel Taub told the Telegraph &Argusthat, from his visit, he felt that the people of Bradford wanted to include instead of excluding Israel as suggested by their representative.
He added that the model adopted was right in ensuring cooperation among people of all faiths and backgrounds in Bradford and the entire region as well.
Galloway was no stranger to this anti-Israel talk since previously he had been accused of racism for walking out of a debate after discovering his opponent was Israeli. He shared publicly anti-Israel conspiracies such as Israel having a hand in the unrest in Ukraine. He went further to suggest that Israel gave the al-Qaeda chemical weapons. In his speech, which caused an uproar on social media and had led to investigations by the British police, Galloway said his electorate didn’t want services, goods or students from Israel. He also discouraged Israeli tourists from visiting his constituency. He called Israel a savage country and declared his rejection of it, urging everyone to do so too.
Daniel Taub was therefore accompanied amidst tight security to honor the invitation of a section of Bradford. He said that he did not believe Galloway spoke for the all the people, pointing out that Israel has always had a long standing relationship with Bradford.
